The University of Tokyo
The University
of Tokyo was established in 1877, as
the first national university in Japan. It offers courses in
essentially all academic disciplines at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels and provides research facilities for these disciplines. The University
aims to provide its students with opportunities for intellectual development as
well as for the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills. The
University has a faculty of approximately 2800 professors, associate
professors, and lecturers, and a total student enrolment of about 28’000. As of
2003, 2100 international students and about 2200 foreign researchers were
coming to the University annually for short and extended visits. The University
is known for the excellence of its faculty and students; many of its graduates
are and have always been leaders in the government, in business, and in the
academic world.
Research and education in the Environment and Sustainability are among the most
important focus areas for the University, and various related organizations
have been established such as the Department of Environmental Studies in the
Graduate School of Frontier Sciences and the International Research Centre for
Sustainable Materials in the Institute
of Industrial Science.
United Nations
University – Environment and Sustainable Development Programme
In 1973, the founders of
UNU gave it a challenging mission: develop original, forward-looking solutions to the world’s most pressing
problems. With its staff of 200 experts from 30 countries, UNU contributes –
through capacity building and research – to resolve global issues, such as
peace, environment, development and science & technology. Headquartered in Tokyo, UNU is a true
global network of 15 research and training centres and programmes
(RTC/Ps), cooperating with more than 40 UN organisations and 100 research institutions.
Environment and Sustainable Development (ESD) Programme focuses on the interactions between human
activities and the natural environment, and their implications for sustainable
human development. The basic issues of environment and natural resource management for
human survival, sustainable development
and welfare are at the core of the themes covered and the Programme
aims to approach these issues in a holistic manner and seeks to generate
solutions with full perspectives which anticipate for long term environmental
changes. In addressing these challenges, the Programme
adopts a multidisciplinary approach combining both
natural and social sciences as well as engineering.
