Workshop 1

Sustainability in Teaching and Learning: how can we avoid the pitfalls of ideology?

In short:

The workshop will present the basic principles involved in shaping corresponding teaching methods, sketch a curriculum on the basis of a selected scientific issue and outline the corresponding teaching, learning and examination methods. Best practices for teaching and learning are a focus.

Whom it may concern:

If you are interested in learning more about teaching and learning methods and experience best practice in the field you should attend this workshop.

Sustainability as a scientific theme in academic training has two main aspects:

(1)      scientific: sustainability as a concept deployed to optimize scientific models which deal with the frontiers of technical and social systems

(2)      ethical: sustainability as a value which influences the actions of the responsible scientist

Both present a significant challenge to education. The first, system-theoretical aspect demands high levels of inter- and transdisciplinary competence. The second, ethical aspect involves the training up of eclectic personalities who view sustainable thinking as a master pattern underpinning all scientific activity. In teaching and courses of study both aspects require special curricula, together with particular methods and strategies for teaching and learning.

The workshop will present the basic principles involved in shaping a corresponding teaching and self-study concept. From the perspective of sustainability, we will sketch a curriculum on the basis of a selected scientific issue and demonstrate in detail the necessary teaching, learning and examination methods.
